DESCRIPTION:In this talk we discuss a special subclass of powe
rful groups called powerfully nilpotent groups. Th
ese are finite p-groups that possess a central ser
ies of a special kind. We will describe some struc
ture theory and a ‘classification’ in terms of an
ancestry tree and powerful coclass. One can view p
owerfully nilpotent groups as the powerful analogu
e of nilpotent groups. There is likewise a natural
powerful analogue of solvable groups\, "powerfull
y solvable groups"\, that we will also discuss bri
efly. For a special situation one can also introdu
ce "powerfully simple groups".
