DESCRIPTION:In 2002 Bridgeland introduced the notion of a stab
ility condition in a triangulated category to prov
ide a mathematical framework for work by Douglas i
n homological mirror symmetry. A fundamental Theor
em says that all stability conditions on a given c
ategory form a complex manifold. However\, in gene
ral it is still not known whether it is non-empty.
The construction is easy for the bounded derived
category of coherent sheaves on a smooth projectiv
e surface\, but for threefolds examples are scarce
. I will give an introduction to the topic\, and e
xplain recent progress.
