DESCRIPTION:The study of out-of-equilibrium thermodynamics has
received a significant thrust thanks to the exper
imental advances in the control and manipulation o
f microscopic systems. Work\, an ubiquitous concep
t in traditional thermodynamics\, assumes in this
context the role of a stochastic variable whose fl
uctuations can be ingeniously related to equilibri
um properties\, as is the case of the celebrated J
arzynski equality [1]. This formalism can be exten
ded to quantum mechanics where work is measured th
rough repeated measurements of the system energy.
The current challenges in quantum thermodynamics i
nclude the design of heat engines and refrigerator
s that exploit the quantum coherence of the workin
g substance.\n\nIn this colloquium\, I will revise
these concepts and discuss feasible experimental
schemes to directly measure work in cold atomic se
tups. The first scheme allows one to measure the w
ork done on an atomic BEC in a double well potenti
al when the atomic self-interaction is varied. I w
ill discuss strategies based on optimal control te
chniques to reduce the irreversible work productio
n [2]. The second scheme allows to measure work in
a system of atoms in optical lattices interacting
with the optical field of a multimode cavity [3].
