DESCRIPTION:A quantum field theory is topological when its amp
litudes only depend on the diffeomorphism class of
the spacetime manifolds. It has long been conject
ured\, and recently proved\, that 3-dimensional to
pological quantum field theories are exactly class
ified by theories of interacting anyons. The proof
is satisfying\, and I will show how it works\, in
particular showing how it gives a powerful new wa
y to understand particle-field duality for these t
heories. This talk will develop these ideas in an
elementary way and no previous knowledge of topolo
