DESCRIPTION:According to hidden-variables theories\, quantum p
hysics is a special\n'equilibrium' case of a much
wider 'nonequilibrium' physics. We\ndescribe the s
earch for that wider physics in a cosmological con
text.\nThe hypothesis that the universe began in a
state of quantum\nnonequilibrium is shown to have
observable consequences. In de\nBroglie-Bohm theo
ry on expanding space\, relaxation to quantum\nequ
ilibrium is shown to be suppressed for field modes
whose quantum\ntime evolution satisfies a certain
inequality\, resulting in a\n'freezing' of early
nonequilibrium for these particular modes. For an\
nearly radiation-dominated expansion\, the inequal
ity implies a\ncorresponding physical wavelength t
hat is larger than the\n(instantaneous) Hubble rad
ius. These results make it possible\, for the\nfir
st time\, to make quantitative predictions for dev
iations from\nquantum theory. We consider\, in par
ticular\, corrections to\ninflationary predictions
for the cosmic microwave background\, and the\npo
ssibility of finding relic cosmological particles
that violate the\nlaws of quantum mechanics. (Refe
