DESCRIPTION:A set _S_ in a group _G_ is said to be _independen
t_ if no element of _S_ can be written as a word i
n the other elements of _S_. A set _S_ in a group
_G_ is said to be a _minimax set_ if it is an inde
pendent generating set of largest size in _G_. My
current research seeks to find good upper bounds f
or sizes of minimax sets in the groups SL_{3(_q_)\, SO3(_q_) and SU3(
_q_). I will present some of the background for th
e research\, some of the tools used\, and some of
the results already obtained.
