DESCRIPTION:The search for exotic fusion systems at odd primes
has turned up maybe new systems with a variety of
properties. In an attempt to bring order to at le
ast some of the chaos\, we classify all exotic fus
ion systems on _p_-groups with an abelian subgroup
of index _p_\, which encompasses the Ruizâ€“Viruel
examples of fusion systems on the extraspecial gro
up 7_{+}^1+2^ and the Clellandâ€“Parker exam
ples\ncoming from GL_{2}(_p_).\n\nAlong th
e way we meet questions about finite simple groups
and their representation theory\, and end up clas
sifying indecomposable modules for almost simple g
roups with the property that the Sylow _p_-subgrou
p has order _p_\, and the module _M_ has only one
non-trivial summand when restricted to the Sylow _
p_-subgroup. The theory then essentially provides
a dictionary between these and new fusion systems\
, leading to a wealth of new examples\, including
another infinite family and several sporadic examp
les.
