DESCRIPTION:If a finite group _A_ acts on a finite group _G_ i
n such a way that C_{G}(_A_)=1\, th
en one can often say something about the structure
of _G_ given properties of _A_. This idea has lon
g been a source of strong and useful results withi
n finite group theory. I will begin with a brief h
istorical overview of results of this kind before
talking in more detail about Khukhro's recent work
in this area\, and how a question which I have co
nsidered is related to his work. Namely\, if we ha
ve a group _RF_ where _R_ is cyclic of prime order
and _F_ is nilpotent with _F_=[_F_\,_R_]\, which
acts on a group _G_ such that C_{G}
(_F_)=1\, then is F(C_{G}(_R_)) ≤ F
(_G_)? I will finish by outlining directions for f
urther work and potential obstacles that one might
encounter in pursuing these.
