DESCRIPTION:We report on recent work with A. Zalesski concerni
ng the study of reductive overgroups of regular el
ements in reductive algebraic groups.\n\nIn the ca
se where the regular element is a regular unipoten
t element\, this work complements the work of Saxl
and Seitz\, where they classified the maximal pos
itive-dimensional closed subgroups _H_ of a simple
algebraic group _G_\, such that _H_ contains a re
gular unipotent element of _G_. Our main result on
unipotent elements shows that a connected reducti
ve subgroup _H_ containing a regular unipotent ele
ment of _G_ does not lie in a proper parabolic sub
group of _G_.\n\nWe will describe the proof of the
above result and its application to the study of
overgroups of regular unipotent elements. Then we
will discuss our current work on overgroups of gen
eral regular elements in simple algebraic groups.\
