DESCRIPTION:The classification of primitive permutation groups
possessing a cycle _x_ of length a power of a pri
me _p_ is a powerful and versatile result. Under t
he permutation representation of such a group\, ov
er a field of characteristic _p_\, the element _x_
acts with a single Jordan block of size _p_\, and
the rest of the matrix is the identity.\n\nIn rec
ent work I have completed the linear analogue of t
his result\, that is\, classified all primitive li
near groups over a field of characteristic _p_ pos
sessing a _p_-element _x_ whose Jordan normal form
has a single non-trivial block. I will talk about
this and the methods involved.
