DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will investigate the use of Trefftz
methods for the numerical discretization of wave
propagation problems in the time-domain. Trefftz m
ethods instead of usual local polynomial approxima
tion spaces\, make use of approximation spaces con
taining locally exact solutions to the differentia
l equation. Recently a number of space-time discon
tinuous Galerkin (dG) methods have been developed
for acoustic and electromagnetic waves. We present
a Trefftz interior penalty dG method for the acou
stic wave equation in the second order form. Full
stability and optimal order convergence analysis f
or this formulation is presented. I will further d
iscuss in the extention of Trefftz methods to more
general wave equations\, in particular to the wav
e equation with damping. The talk concludes with a
set of numerical experiments in one- and two-spat
ial dimensions.\n\nThis is joint work with E.H. Ge
orgoulis (Leicester and Athens) and O. Lijoka (Edi
nburgh).\n
