DESCRIPTION:I shall discuss parameter estimation for two simpl
e forms of CSHMM - the dwell-only model and the sl
oping loudness model. The former is equivalent (fo
r estimation purposes) to the hierarchical Gaussia
n model. I will sketch some of the literature on t
he topic\, compare the Baum-Welch algorithm with t
he EM algorithm\, show how Baum-Welch estimation c
an be performed\, and remark on the fact that the
mathematics is equivalent to the theory underlying
maximum likelihood estimation of Gaussian paramet
ers.\n\nThe sloping loudness model can be approach
ed in much the same way. The mathematics becomes m
ore complicated if realisations occur for which th
ere is only one observation: in this case I show t
hat the mathematics is equivalent to a generalisat
ion of the earlier problem which has been studied
by Anderson and Olkin.\n\nI shall present results
on TIMIT consonants if I have any.
