DESCRIPTION:The probability that in a room of n people (with r
andomly chosen birthdays) no two people share a bi
rthday is bounded above by (1-1/365)^{n /choose 2}
\, what the probability would be if all pairwise i
nteractions were independent. I call this the `Bi
rthday Inequality’ and explore whether it generali
zes to geometric settings. In particular\, I’ll s
how how it can be used to bound the partition func
tion of the hard sphere model and the hard-core la
ttice gas model from statistical physics\, then pr
opose that it may be useful in locating a phase tr
ansition in these models.
