DESCRIPTION:*Note the unusual time*\n\nThe 26 sporadic finite
simple groups is a fascinating \ntopic in finite g
roup theory. The largest of the sporadic \ngroups\
, the Monster\, was predicted to exist by Fischer
\nand Griess in 1973 and it was shown to exist by
Griess\na decade later. He constructed it in its a
ction on a \ncommutative non-associative algebra o
f dimension 196884\, \nnow called the Griess algeb
ra. Later the Griess algebra\nwas extended to an i
nfinite-dimensional vertex operator\nalgebra\, the
kind of object that first appeared in \ntheoretic
al physics.\n\nIn the talk we revisit the history
of the Monster and \nthe Griess algebra and then f
ocus on the new approach\,\npioneered by Miyamoto\
, Sakuma\, and on further recent \ndevelopments.
