As the first phase of the LHC programme comes to an end, I take a look back on how we got here, and give an experimentalist’s view of the main challenges so far. I’ll present recent results on Standard Model and BSM physics from CMS , and describe how the detector and experimental programme are likely to evolve over the next decade.
