LOFAR and pulsar timing

The next generation of radio telescopes will provide us with an excellent opportunity to study many aspects of pulsars, in particular their timing behaviour. The first of these telescopes to be completed is LOFAR and while its very low operating frequencies preclude it from achieving the nanosecond timing precision required for gravitational wave detection, it will provides us with extremely important information on the role of the interstellar medium and variability in the pulsar clock. I’ll discuss how we can use both the full LOFAR and single LOFAR stations, like that at Chilbolton to achieve these goals. I’ll present some recent highlights of our commissioning work and also discuss how we can use other upcoming telescopes for these studies.
