Harness light-matter interaction in low-dimensional materials and nanostructures: from advanced light manipulation to smart photonic devices

The revolutionary control of light via low-dimensional materials and advancements in nanophotonic techniques will power future photonic applications. These innovations will expedite smart photonic devices that process and transport information, aid biomedical sensing and health monitoring, boost solar energy harvesting, etc. However, a challenge arises from the size mismatch between low-dimensional materials/nanostructures and free-space light, limiting their interaction at the nanoscale. To overcome this, strong light confinement is crucial. Prominent approaches to accomplish this are confining light with nanocavities/nanoresonators, or coupling light with material resonances, such as electron oscillation, excitons, and lattice vibrations, to form half-light-half-matter quasiparticles with large momentum, which includes surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), exciton-polaritons (EPs), and phonon polaritons (PhPs). In this talk, I will present our works on the advanced manipulation of light with low-dimensional materials and nanostructures, including: (1) Opto-thermoelectric manipulation of individual nanoparticles; (2) Plasmon-2D-semiconductor hybrid structures for enhanced light-matter interaction; (3) Low-loss dielectric nanostructures for advanced light manipulation; (4) Tailor mid-IR electromagnetic waves with 2D vdW materials and low-symmetry crystals. I will also briefly introduce my future plans to explore advanced manipulation of PhPs and exotic polariton physics via low-dimensional materials and nanostructures.
