Since March 2010, the Large Hadron Collider has set a record for high-energy collisions, by colliding proton beams at a centre-of-mass energy sqrt(s)=7 TeV. In this seminar, the present status of the ALICE detector and its performance in the detection of J/psi mesons will be discussed. Some preliminary results on inclusive J/psi production in both dielectron and dimuon decay channels, using this detector, will be described. In addition, the prospects of measuring such signals in the early heavy-ion runs will also be mentioned.

This talk is part of the Particle Physics Seminars series.
