We present an abstract topos-theoretic framework for interpreting Stone-type dualities; five known dualities are seen to be specializations of just one topos-theoretic phenomenon, and new dualities are introduced. We then apply our topos-theoretic interpretation to obtain results connecting properties of preorders and properties of the corresponding topological spaces, and we derive adjunctions between various kinds of categories as natural applications of our general methodology. We also discuss a number of other applications to Algebra, Topology and Logic.
