Astrophysics is almost literally blue sky research (although most astronomers do prefer to work with dark skies). However, the techniques we use to do our research can have wider applications. In this talk I will briefly describe my astrophysics research into the evolution of galaxies and how this has led me to into research and application in areas such as health and Earth observations. I will discuss some of the challenges and benefits of this kind of interdisciplinary work. I will focus on a particular case study, AstroCast, where we have developed an accurate drought forecasting method which is now being adopted for the national early warning system in Kenya.
