I will examine critically some of the basic methodological assumptions built into denotational semantic models of programming languages. I will argue that these assumptions are too strong and make semantic-directed approaches to program verification (especially for security properties) difficult to apply in practice. I will sketch out an alternative approach inspired by Paul Levy’s “operational game semantics”.

This will not be a technical talk.
