Exotics Searches at Colliders, Why and How?

When and how did exotics searches begin? What has an exotics search constituted in the past (this will be a bit of an historical tour of now-ancient TDRs) and where are we with searches today? I will then focus on current searches and discuss efforts to search for long-lived particles.
