We describe a technique used to construct groups of type PSL _2(q) inside the finite exceptional group G(p), and count the number of conjugacy classes. In some cases this gives information about the embedding inG(\mathbb{C}), which can be used to say something about the embedding in G(k) for a field k of certain characteristic.

An example where this fails is Alt(6)\simeq PSL _2(9); we briefly explain how it can be studied using the Dickson form on the E_6 natural module.

This work is used to make progress in the classification of the maximal subgroups of exceptional groups of Lie type.
