If you have a question about this talk, please contact Chris Parker. We describe a technique used to construct groups of type PSL _2(q) inside the finite exceptional group G(p), and count the number of conjugacy classes. In some cases this gives information about the embedding inG(\mathbb{C}), which can be used to say something about the embedding in G(k) for a field k of certain characteristic. An example where this fails is Alt(6)\simeq PSL _2(9); we briefly explain how it can be studied using the Dickson form on the E_6 natural module. This work is used to make progress in the classification of the maximal subgroups of exceptional groups of Lie type. This talk is part of the Algebra Seminar series.
