The classification of maximal subgroups of finite simple groups is “almost” complete, meaning that there is a finite list of candidate maximal subgroups to study. In this talk I will present some ideas on how to attack the problem for the groups F_4(q) and E_6(q), showcasing different ways of exploiting the structure of the underlying Lie algebra.
