If you have a question about this talk, please contact David Craven. One of the projects to provide an alternative proof of the classification of the finite simple groups intends to understand those simple groups which have local, or even parabolic, characteristic p. I’ll explain what these notions mean and then discuss recent results which can be used in the final recognition of such groups. Along the way, or rather towards the end, I’ll explain how two of the configurations lead to a construction of an infinite family of exotic fusion systems.
