If you have a question about this talk, please contact Elizabeth Blackburn. For many years theorists have predicted that metals in one-dimension are not characterized by electron-like quasiparticles but by new emergent excitations called spinons and holons. The experimental evidence for the breakup of the electron into these new particles has proved challenging. I will talk about one recent experiment, Science 325, 597 and discuss the context and implications. This talk is part of the Condensed Matter Physics Seminars series.
